Aquion’s technology is based on a simple idea: In order to meet the challenges of the world’s growing energy needs and increase the use of renewable power, we need large-scale energy storage systems that are high performance, safe, sustainable and cost-effective. The company founder, Professor Jay Whitacre, set out to solve this problem and discovered a simple and elegant solution that is a twist on a 200 year-old technology: saltwater batteries. Aquion developed this solution into our patented Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI™) chemistry, a unique saltwater electrolyte battery technology. Using abundant, nontoxic materials and modern low cost manufacturing techniques, our AHI batteries are now ready to take on the global energy storage challenge.
Aquion’s battery technology offers thousands of real-use application cycles for long duration (4 to 20 hour) applications. The batteries are extremely tolerant to abuse with the ability to stand at a partial state of charge with minimal degradation. The system requires no costly thermal management or regular maintenance and contains no hazardous materials, corrosive acids, or noxious fumes.
Our unique Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI) chemistry is composed of a saltwater electrolyte, manganese oxide cathode, carbon composite anode, and synthetic cotton separator. The battery utilizes non-corrosive reactions at the anode and cathode to prevent deterioration of the materials. The water-based chemistry results in a nontoxic and non-combustible product that is safe to handle and environmentally friendly.

All of the battery stacks and units are tested operating at 40 and 50 degrees Celsius (104 degrees F and 122 degrees F). One of the benefits of the Aquion battery is that it can run just fine in a hot environment.

Aquion’s M-Line Battery Modules have the footprint of a standard pallet, making them compatible with most high-density racking systems. The M-Line Modules are scalable for a wide range of interior configurations. This enables Aquion and its partners to design and deploy large systems in a way that optimizes space and leverages existing logistics infrastructure. Aquion’s AHI batteries are the much-needed solution for stationary, long-duration, daily cycling applications. Designed to meet the needs of existing and emerging storage applications, AHI batteries enable new possibilities for off-grid, microgrid, energy management, and grid service applications.
Microgrids range in generating capacity from kW’s to MW’s and provide power to a variety of users ranging from small cell phone towers to large commercial, industrial and military customers. Energy storage is used to enhance the stability and efficiency of microgrids by decoupling the generation source from the load. This is particularly useful for systems with diesel generation or intermittent renewables as the means of electricity production.
